Dancers, it’s time to start working smarter, not harder! Living paycheck to paycheck as a professional dancer or dance teacher does not signify you living your best life! I want to change that!
Listen, I get it. I taught dance classes, all throughout New York City (at places like Steps on Broadway, and the Joffrey Ballet School, among many others), and the tri-state area, for 13 years straight. This was all while performing, choreographing, running my own dance teacher staffing company, hosting a dance radio, and dance tv show, writing for my own award-winning blog, and doing social media marketing consulting.
I know! It sounds crazy right? Well, it is, sort of lol.
But here’s the deal…
One thing I always hated about being a dance teacher (well, actually, the ONLY thing I hated about being a dance teacher), was the lack of financial stability.
What I mean by that is:
->You only get paid when you physically show up to work.
->You don’t get paid time off.
->You don’t get paid vacations.
->You don’t get paid for holidays.
->You don’t get paid for snow days.
->You only get paid twice a month.
->If you get sick, you’re screwed.
->If you get injured, you’re screwed.
->If you have a baby, and need to take maternity (or paternity) leave, you’re screwed.
This is what I hated about being a professional dancer/dance teacher, full-time. Don’t even get me started on the summertime, when everything slows down, and the opportunities are not as vast as they are during the school year.
It’s a rewarding career, but a challenging one too, from a financial perspective.
So after reading books like, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, by Robert Kiyosaki, “The Total Money Makeover”, by Dave Ramsey, and “Women & Money”, by Suze Orman, my mindset went through a major, intentional shift!
I realized, very early on, that performing, and teaching dance classes alone, was never going to help me build the type of financial stability, wealth, and legacy that I desired. It just wasn’t going to happen. So I started experimenting, and creating different types of income streams for myself, which allowed me to work smarter, not harder, and also, make my money work for me.
Dance friend, there is a whole world available to you, outside of just trading dollars for hours, in order to make a living as a dance artist.
